Eye Care for Children

As parents, we are all certainly concerned about the health and well-being of our children, but sometimes taken for granted is our children’s vision.

It is important that all children have a complete vision evaluation before the age of five to check visual acuity as well as to examine the overall health of the eyes. Amblyopia (lazy eye), for example, is a condition that, when caught early enough, can be treated with improved vision in the affected eye. Once a child reaches the age of eight or nine, the visual system becomes less pliable or correctable and, even if found, such conditions as amblyopia are more difficult to treat successfully.

We also recommend that parents watch for clues that can point to progressive vision challenges, such as complaints about seeing the marker board at school or headaches while or after reading. With proper diagnosis, many vision problems can be effectively treated with eyeglass prescriptions or other recommendations.

Moving from glasses to contact lenses, or prescribing contact lenses for first time correction, is often a good solution for children involved in sports or for those whom glasses are not an option.

At the office of Peter J. Kelly M.D., P.C. we are as committed as you are to the health and well-being of your child. We take great care in providing the best care possible in a friendly and relaxed environment.

We encourage you to consider your children’s eye care needs and welcome your children’s eye care needs and welcome you to contact us with questions or to schedule a routine examination.
